Molly Gochman

Buffalo Bayou Products

Installation View, Buffalo Bayou Products 2006

The intention of Buffalo Bayou Products is to encourage analysis of the current state of Houston’s bayou through a subversive demonstration of faux Bayou based products.

In this performance, Gochman encourages the community to examine the relationship between the preservation of natural resources and their commodified value. As people experience the essence of the Bayou’s nutrient-rich mud, widely known by Houstonians to be polluted, the mud that’s “up for sale” becomes a lamentable metaphor for the relationship between the dollar and the resource.

Buffalo Bayou Products is an example of how Gochman encourages people to use their own experiential knowledge, intuition, and sensory perception rather than accepting the information presented.
