Traffic

Bird populations are being adversely affected by the noise of automobile traffic.

Their mating ritual has been compromised because they are unable to hear bird songs, an essential part of each species’ and each individual bird’s identity. Songs make birds alluring to each other and beautiful to us. In October 2009, the sound installation Traffic was experienced under the branches of a large live oak in New Orleans City Park, just behind the New Orleans Museum of Art. Bird vocalizations were arranged to subtly conform to the underlying structure of the song “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” composed by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson.
